Winter – Jacket Time?

Every so often you hear of situations that happen in private that must remain as a secret but when you really check you realize that there is nothing secretive about the situation, it is simply a matter of a taboo topic being present.  In a Jamaican society, anything topic that is considered taboo, give it time, you will eventually hear the topic become one of discussion in music; afterwards it will be on everybody’s lips.  However, the topic at the centre of this entry is nothing new, it is simply one that surfaces from time to time but was never given much attention.  When I heard the latest song in which it is being discussed, the Macka Diamond’s Jacket Daddy, I realize that this topic is really one that has gotten little attention outside of the musical space and so I bring to you – The Jacket.

In a Jamaican space, a jacket is a label used for a child who is given or being fathered by a man who isn’t the biological father.  Put another way, the man is told by the mother that the child is his but it truly isn’t.  The idea behind the term is that a jacket (the clothing), when being worn by a male must always fit comfortably and properly in order for it to be considered his, otherwise he will be said to be wearing someone else’s clothes.  Therefore, a man (the wearer of the jacket) fathering a child who is truly not his (the jacket) is said to be wearing a jacket that had not been cut to fit.  Had it been, then the child would truly be his and would then have some form of resemblance.

The situation is nothing to be taken lightly because at the end of the day, there is a life in the middle of all this ‘fashion’ faux pas.  At some point in time, someone is going to be hurt, whether it is the mother, fathering father, biological father or the innocent individual in all this, the child.  Some females are said to use this action as one seen as a pension plan based on the fact that the man who is not the rightful father has some level of affluence.  However, at the end of the day, a child is being prohibited from being fathered by his/her rightful father.  There are numerous things that can go wrong in this situation.

On the other hand, mothers sees the matter simply as allowing her child to have a father or at least a father figure.  This is a prominent situation in the Caribbean as a result of most fathers being labelled as, and is in most of these cases, absent.  Inform a man that he is going to be a father and he may just run so a woman will just have to make a decision.  The decision can be one that is difficult to make, as observed in the Macka Diamond song, while the decision can be an easy one to make but a hard one to live with.  Just listen to the hurt in the voice of Tanay Stephens in her song below.

This situation may be seen as the ultimate sin but in some sense, people, such as philosophers, will consider it as an matter of Utilitarianism; judging the action by its outcome rather than by its moral standards.  In this sense, it will be seen as an action that is done for the greater good.  What do you think, is there more harm than good at the centre of this action and who stands to benefit and or lose more?

Little White Lie

By Tanya Stephens

INTRO

Once upon a time there was a happy family

There was a baby girl, a daddy and there was a mommy

Mommy had a secret, she told a little white lie

When she tucked the baby in at night, she sang her this lullaby

VERSE 1

You got your daddy’s eyes, you got his smile

I feel my heart breaking every time I hear you cry

I am gonna burn in hell but it’s no sacrifice

Your stability is worth a million lies

I see your daddy in everything you do

And if you could talk I bet you talk like him too

But he can’t be your daddy

I hope you understand

A man who thinks he is your father is a much better man

Maybe one day, you’ll end up crying on Ricky Lake

But baby it’s a chance your mamma’s willing to take

Cause I love you, even if my heart is gonna break

Aint no reason you should suffer for my mistake so

CHORUS

I lied

Baby I tried

And it kills me inside, yeah

But am gonna live with this until the day I die

And I hurt

Baby oh how I hurt

But I know what you worth, yeah

So am gonna live with this until I hit the dirt someday

NARRATION

And every day by herself the momma cried

But at nights she smiled when the daddy was by her side

There were times she almost told him and it really broke her heart

But she forced herself to keep the secret that was tearing her apart

VERSE 2

I can’t sleep at nights, I lost my appetite

Everybody keeps saying “the baby looks kinda light”

And I tell them, every new born baby looks the same

While I am praying to God please let your colour change

The emotions on his face when he’s looking at you

I could have tell him he aint your poppa if I wanted to

He’s got your picture tattooed on his arm

Now he’s bragging to his friends about his first born

Oh God and I love him, really I do

If he ever found out he’d kill me too

Now am caught between a rock and a really hard place

I’d give anything to keep that smile on his face

CHORUS

So I lied

Baby I tried

And it kills me inside, yeah

But am gonna live with this until the day I die

And I hurt

Baby oh how I hurt

But I know what you’re worth, yeah

So am gonna live with this until I hit the dirt someday

NARRATION

Mommy kept the family together the best way she could

Cause she knew in this case the truth would do more harm than good

What daddy didn’t know didn’t hurt him

He had no cause to fret

That’s as close to happily ever after anyone can get

Oh how I tried

And it kills me inside

But am gonna live with this until the day I die

And I hurt

Baby oh how I hurt

But I know what you’re worth, yeah yeah

So am gonna live with this until I hit the dirt someday
