I have been bombarding myself with this issue from late last year and a solution is nowhere in sight.  As such, I have brought it to you for your assistance but before I present the problem, a little history.

Jamaican music comprises a unique convention, one which, over the last 5 years, has been adopted internationally and across other musical genres.  The system I am speaking of is what I refer to as the Multi-track Convention.  With this system, producers create a riddim (rhythm) and choose, from the plethora of talented artistes, who they want to voice (have lay a track on their riddm).  In essence, the multi-track convention has one riddim with several songs.  Under this system, there will be a few songs from a single riddim that hit the bigtime. These are the songs everyone will know from the riddim that will make them go “yeah man, mi know di riddim” when they were oblivious when it was initially mentioned.  Until the Overproof Riddim of 2011, which had 20+ songs, the standard was 12 songs, the most, to a single riddim.  There is talk existing that Jamaican music is losing its value because the participants, from the producers to the artistes, are becoming envious and selfish, the latter of which I agree with wholeheartedly.  This selfishness has arisen from the numerous rivalries existing in the music industry hence, producers not wanting to work with certain artistes and vice versa and even artistes wanting exclusive riddims.  Regardless of this ‘infraction’, there are those music personnel, artistes or otherwise, who ignore the chaos and strive to do what they do best while restoring Jamaican music to its former glory.

Another issue placing a heavy burden on Jamaican music is the love of the fast money.  This issue has poisoned the minds of a lot of newcomers to the music industry so everybody is producing, thus crowding the airwaves with inferior creations.  I am observing, on average, 7 new riddims being released everyday with only 1 failing the ‘bullshit’ test.  Come on, let us be realistic, the music industry is not going anywhere, personnel need to take time to hone their craft so we can have quality music overall.

Now we return to the matter.  In 2011 there have been some good reggae riddims which I have narrowed done to the top two but I cannot decide on which is the best.  I love both riddims; both are soulful and all the songs on both are brilliant.  I am talking about the Monte Carlo and the Heart & Soul Riddims.  Most people will choose the latter because it was released last but both were exceptionally created.  These two riddims are attention-grabbers but we can only crown one; making it the City Life Riddim of 2010.

I have provided you with the lyrics of a song from each riddim.  The first is a Jah Cure from the Heart & Soul Riddim followed by a Pressure Buss Pipe from the Monte Carlo Riddim.
