SONG ENDS

We are in the 5th month of the year and with all the man-made chaos that have transpired in just 132 days (to the writing of this entry) resulting in the loss of lives means we have to give thanks for life because it is definitely a gift.  I am reluctant to consciously pay attention to the news because there is always some war happening.  I however want to put a different spin on things today and focus on the individuals who we collectively have to be gracious on behalf of; the children of and in today’s global society.  It is fitting but more painful and ironic that this spin has to be taken in May as we celebrate Child’s Month.  It cuts to the core every time I hear about the death of a child, but more so under the vicious and inhumane circumstances they exit this world.

Since the beginning of the year, Jamaica is seeing a trend that, despite my old age, is quite new to me. Between January and March, the lifeless bodies of at least five females have been found disposed in bushes out of the sight of the general public.  Now, when you hear the conditions these bodies are found in or how they were found, you immediately smell foul play.  When the dust has settled and the reports are revealed, the listening public is left traumatized; at least I know I am hence the reason I try to avoid the news.  Let us start at the beginning shall we!  There are identical missing person reports or Ananda alerts issued for these children.  The mere Ananda alert is an indication that child killings aren’t new.  In 2008, Ananda Dean went missing after she was last seen boarding in a bus in Kingston.  After days of searching, her decomposing body was found off the side of a precipice.  As an indication of the effect the incident had on the country, the ‘Ananda Alert’ was created to notify the public of missing children.  So forward seven years to 2015, several Ananda alerts were issued for missing females, pinpointing crime number 1 – KIDNAPPING.  After days of searching and pleas from families, the bodies of these females are discovered. We are now at crime 2 – MURDER.  When a body is decapitated and minced, I often wonder what is the sense of an autopsy, well, I am done questioning it.  Crime 3 – SEX WITH A MINOR, so happens to be revealed after pathologists reported, at the time of death, these CHILDREN were pregnant.

While you take a moment to digest the information and get the disgust from your systems, let me point out how many systems have failed at this point.  We begin with the network of the family.  Some rebooting and reprocessing of the mainframe need to be done because at what time do these children get to socialized and arrive at a decision of having sex?  I can’t say consent to sex because minors cannot consent to sex so, let us add RAPE as crime number 4.  Present day family systems need to be restructured because we are letting down our children.  We brought them here so it is our responsibility to protect them.  Just last week another lifeless teenage body was discovered and the mother’s significant other is being fingered as the culprit.  What is worse is that members in the community are saying that the mother knew of the abuse the child was suffering.  Can people be that brutish?

At no point in time can we lay all the blame at the feet of the family because they can do so much and no more as round the clock surveillance is not in effect.  Gone are the days when the community and the general public assumed the responsibility of surrogate parents and children were reprimanded when they stepped out of line. We the general public need to reclaim our roles and start looking out for our future generation because if we fail to step in now, without a doubt, we don’t have much to look forward to tomorrow.

The government too has to take some blame for the bad card our children are dealt because had they sent a clear and vivid message from 2008 then we would not have so many of these issues dealing with in 2015.  They have the power and the resources to attack this situation head on but their focus is often blurred and as a result they direct their attention to matters of little or no priority.

Now that your system is cleared, let us talk about the justice system.  With some quick work from investigators, they were able to identify and detain the culprits of these crimes and they happened to be grown men, no younger than 35.  So I have a question for the powers that be, when are we bringing back hanging or some form of capital punishment?  Things have definitely surpassed the stage of putting these animals in prison for life.  If we are going to make a mark and lead by example, send a message to the general network of criminals, we need to act now!! We need back the gallows now.  That is my opinion which many people do not share but I am not going to sit back quietly until the situation end up on my doorstep!!

I have been talking about females from the onset of this entry but the reality is that no child is safe.  On April seventh, a mother sat in her yard bathing her one year old son when a midday gun battle ended up spilling into her yard claiming the life of her baby.  So I guess hygiene now has to take a backseat and give way to safety as a priority.  Since when is having a bath not safe?  I now have to worry about germs and gunmen at the same time? Come on, multitasking is not that high on my skillset.  If that incident wasn’t bad enough, on April 15, three teenage boys were killed execution style.  Now, some of the biggest monsters in society these days are also the youngest. Hence, there is no guarantee that these murders were not reprisal killings.  Again, it brings us back to the importance of the networks we spoke of earlier.

We have to make it our priority to ensure the safety of our children.  Let us give them a chance to experience life.
